I think I am setting a record for myself today with how soon I’m sharing my favorites after the month has passed. Usually, I feel like it takes until the next month is halfway over for me to decide what was worth sharing as my favorite items from the past month, but today, I thought I’d go ahead and go with my gut. May felt as though it flew by and I have no doubt that the rest of the summer with speed by just as quickly. I was in and out of town with a friend’s wedding and a trip to the beach plus plenty going on in Birmingham. I have a feeling that my next few months may include some newer favorite items with a lot of travel on my agenda, but for now, here is what I loved in May.
At the beginning of the year, I made a challenge for myself of not purchasing a single book this year. Six months in and I haven’t caved! That means that I’ve been relying on the library and the Libby app (everyone needs it) to be my source for everything I read. I hadn’t heard of this book before, but when browsing for books to read over Memorial Day weekend at the beach, I picked this up from the suggested read section downstairs in our library. Boy am I glad I did. This was the best book I’ve read in a while and was one of those books that I had so much trouble putting down. It turns out it’s the second in a mystery/thriller series and even without having read the first book I was still able to follow along. That being said, I am hoping that my library has the first one so that I have an equally as good book to take with me to the beach over the fourth of July weekend. By now y’all probably know that thrillers and murder mysteries are my go-to genre so if you’re like me and love reads of that nature add this to your list.
If you look into my work tote at any given time, you’re likely to see Truffle pouches like this holding everything from chargers to my checkbook. I love using smaller bags inside of totes to keep things organized, and these are by far my favorite. Over the years I’ve grown quite the collection in various sizes and use them for makeup as well. I loved having these on hand this past month as I packed toiletries and miscellaneous items for travel and especially love how easy they are to clean after a trip. It’s also handy to be able to see exactly what is inside of them and I’ve even started to leave my large navy one (not pictured) packed with travel sizes of my favorite products to make it easier to head out of town when the time comes!
Every year around this time Charlotte tilbury’s Healthy Glow Moisturizer makes the cut in my favorites list. I like having a lightweight moisturizer that provides a little bit of coverage and color without feeling heavy on my skin in the summer. I’ve never found one that does that better for me than this one. While it is pricey, this is only my second container of it since it lasts such a long time!
I was on the hunt for a high-waisted pair of classic white jeans for months before I finally decided to try this pair by Topshop that I found on Nordstrom’s website. I was skeptical that they would be too thin or not fit right in the waist but was pleasantly surprised when I put them on for the first time. Not only were they high-waisted enough for my liking but they also hit my ankles at a normal spot and are made of quality material that is thick enough not to have to worry about them being see through. The only downside is that the sizing is a little weird, but once you figure that out I have no doubt you’d love them too.
Urban Decay Setting Spray (currently on sale)
I’ve known what setting spray was but never really used it until the lady doing my makeup for Kate’s wedding sprayed it on my face. Thank goodness she did considering my makeup was done by 9:00 that morning and needed to last till the ceremony and reception later that night. I’m convinced that this stuff is the only reason my makeup didn’t budge in the heat and humidity of being outside for the better half of the day. When I saw it as a point reward on Sephora’s website when I placed an order for the item below, I decided to snag it to have on hand for days when my makeup needs to stay put. I’ve since used it when shooting blog photos now that it is so hot outside and this stuff helped my makeup last.
Speaking of the heat and humidity, my hair always needs a bit of help this time of year. I’ve gotten to the point where I rarely wear it down in the summer since it seems inevitable that it will frizz. I had read some great reviews of this hair oil and decided to try and see if this could be my solution, and so far it has helped tame my hair against the humidity enough that I’m not afraid to wear it down!
St. Tropez Self Tanner (currently on sale)
Like the Charlotte Tilbury moisturizer, St. Tropez self-tanner is another favorite that seems to resurface this time each year. When I want to look a little bit tanner without putting in the effort of sitting outside, I apply this with a mitt for a natural looking, streak-free tan. Since I use it sporadically, one container of this lasts me a long time.
I had had my eyes on these sandals since last summer and finally decided to purchase them a few months ago. I loved them so much that I even had them included in a travel feature that I worked on for Southern Lady’s July/August issue. Mine definitely look worn on the soles, but when my foot is in them, the nude leather doesn’t look quite as worn and is easy to pair with a variety of outfits. I have no doubt that these will continue to be my summer shoe staple.
What recommendations do you have for me? I’d love to try out any product that you would consider your favorite from this past month!
