Gifts to Give Young Adults

I had every intention of posting my personal Christmas and birthday wishlist today (they are going up tomorrow instead), but after not posting this gift guide yesterday afternoon I knew things would need to be reorganized to get this live. Whether you know a newly married couple, someone just starting out in a new job or home this gift guide is for them. There are so many items on this list that I'd love as well so if you don't fit those categories it's still worth a look! Better than that is the fact that a lot of the items included are on sale. The Nespresso and Roomba are deals at the moment so if you're considering them now is the time to shop.

If you happen to spot any items that you’re interested in giving or receiving, click directly on the product in the image below to be taken to where it can be shopped!

And if you haven’t checked them out already, be sure to take a look at the following gift guides for even more ideas:

The Best of Black Friday Sales

I hope that y'all are off of work today and continuing to enjoy time with your family and friends. We came to the beach for the remainder of my break and have plans to go out on the boat this morning. Before departing I made it a priority to share some of the best Black Friday sales I've seen and will shop this afternoon. I scrolled through some of my favorite online retailers to narrow down some of my favorite items currently included in the sales. Unlike my usual posts, you will need to scroll beneath the image (instead of clicking directly on the item in the graphic) to be taken to where it can be purchased. I also included a round up beneath all of these graphics of my all around favorites from the sales listed. I hope to continue to update this throughout the weekend so that it can be your one stop shop as you scroll through sales!

Gift Ideas for Mom

What better time to browse the web than after eating your Thanksgiving meal? For those of you doing that, I have another gift guide ready to go for you, and today’s involve gifts for your mom. As with my other gift guides, I did my best to include items from a variety of places at varying price points.

If you happen to spot any items that you’re interested in giving or receiving, click directly on the product in the image below to be taken to where it can be shopped!

And if you haven’t checked them out already, be sure to take a look at the following gift guides for even more ideas:

My Most Worn and Used Big Ticket Gifts

Happy Thanksgiving! I am so thrilled to be slowing down a bit today to spend time with my family at the beach. While I know I’ll still be doing some work; it will definitely be mixed in with quality family time, rest (already planning on a nap after a late night for a friends’ deb ball last night), and plenty of delicious food. Since I know a lot of you are in the process of compiling your Christmas wishlists (if you need a whole list of ideas of what to ask for click here) or shopping sales, I put together all of my favorite big-ticket items and links to where they can be shopped on sale!

As I’ve gotten older, my Christmas list has become more and more practical. Fortunately, I get just as excited unwrapping these practical gifts as I did those top of the list items from when I’m little since I know they will receive a ton of use.

One of the most unbelievable collaborations I’ve gotten to do through my blog was the one I did around the time of my college graduation with Michele Watches. I didn’t fully expect the collaboration to be a reality until this watch showed up in the mail. I remember a few friends were with me when I picked up the package, and they made me unwrap it in front of them so they could see it too. At first, I thought I would only wear it on occasion, but since receiving it well over a year and a half ago, I’ve worn it almost every day. The square face is modern yet still classic, and the ability to change the bands has been an unexpected feature that I’ve adored since it makes it feel like I have more options to choose from. A watch had never really been on my wishlist, and now I can’t imagine not having it on me at all times.

I have this one and this one.

Sticking with the jewelry trend, my David Yurman bracelets, like my Michele watch, are items I reach for daily. My first David Yurman was actually a gift to myself, my sophomore of high school. I had seen them and loved the simplistic style and combination of metals and eventually saved up enough money to purchase my own. I have since added to my collection and love the layered look and variety of bracelets made by the brand. As such a timeless piece, I could see many girls categorizing a David Yurman bracelet as one of the best gifts they have received as well.

While there is definitely a bit of sticker shock when you see the price of a waxed Barbour jacket for the first time, I can assure you it is worth EVERY penny. This is, without a doubt, one of the most worn items in my closet. I received mine for Christmas my freshman year of college (meaning I’ve had it for five years) and wear it regularly for almost three full seasons of the year. I have the Barbour Beadnell jacket in the color Sage in a U.S. 6 and have since invested in a hood and liner for the coat. Even with those additions, I think that if I had a quarter for every time I wear it, I would be on the verge of being able to buy another one. I am actually attempting to re-wax mine for the first time myself this weekend (I meant to send it to the company since they can do repairs and re-wax the jacket for $50 but don’t want to part with it currently since it is such a staple). If you’re considering purchasing a Barbour jacket, I have shared a complete guide on the brand and their jackets in this post from last year.

Growing in popularity in the last few years, this was a bit of a wild card item for me to own when I first got it in my junior year of college. Since then, you see people in Truegrit (and Truegrit lookalike) jackets everywhere. I’ll be the first to admit it isn’t the most fashionable jacket ever, but boy is it comfy. It feels like a blanket and is the perfect thing to throw on with leggings and slippers when you feel like lounging. These come in a number of colors and styles that both girls and guys alike would live in this winter if gifted one. I have the men's version, and no one can tell the difference!

Sometimes a gift to yourself can’t be beaten since you know precisely what you want. That’s how I feel about this Patagonia Puffer Jacket that I got for myself during the Nordstrom Anniversary sale this year. I have a white North Face puffer jacket that I got before my 8thgrade class trip to Washington D.C. (it’s as shocking to me as it probably is to y’all that this jacket still fits and appears to be white) and decided it was finally time for an upgrade. I chose this jacket in particular because it would be easy to put on over other jackets and can be packed up into a very tiny size. I’ve already worn it a bunch and know that I will continue to do so.

We may need to take a quick moment of silence for this next item since I think mine has officially bit the dust. I have quite literally worn my Frye Melissa Riding Boots into the ground (more than once too since I’ve had them re-soled). I have had my eyes peeled for a cute pair of riding boots to replace these with but can not seem to find something as classic as these and plan to replace my boots with the same pair. From November until March, I wear these boots constantly with dresses or jeans. I’ll probably get the pair I currently have re-soled in rubber so that I can continue to wear them (even when it rains) since I love them that much. The quality of Frye’s boots is unparalleled, and I’ve been impressed by how good these boots still look despite the countless treks across campus I’ve put them through.

Speaking of rain, Hunter Rain Boots and a must-have for any college girl having to walk to class in the rain. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that once your feet stop growing, investing in footwear that works for the weather you’re faced with and your style is a worthwhile purchase. I adore Hunter rain boots and have two pairs. I’ve had my taller pair (currently 33% off) since middle school and don’t wear them as often as the short, grey high-gloss pair I got in college. I am so thankful for these boots on rainy days and would highly recommend adding them to your list if you find yourself confused with which shoes to wear on especially rainy days.

20% off with the code THANKS20

Growing up, I called these farm boots since we always knew to pack them when we went to our grandparent's house, which we call the farm. I even have one of my aunt’s pair from college in my closet since these shoes last forever! Whether you’re looking for something easy to hose off when dirty or keep your toes warm in the snow, these boots can fit the bill!

Up to 20% off with the code THANKFUL

I love tote bags and am under the impression that you can never really have too many. That’s a good mindset to have when trying to narrow down which Barrington Gifts St. Anne Tote print to purchase. Thanks to my indecision, I now have four different prints of this tote. The durability and functionality of it are what keeps me coming back to it time and time again. Whether I’m carrying my laptop, magazines, and other work supplies or textbooks in college, these totes only get better with age. Thanks to the customized nature, I also love that you can create exactly what you want to fit your style when making this purchase!

I warned you that I love tote bags! I received my very first Longchamp bag in eighth grade and have been a huge fan of the brand ever since. While I’ve outgrown that first medium-sized chocolate brown one I received years ago, my navy, large Le Pliage tote is the perfect bag to tote to the gym or pack in when heading out of town. The material is so durable, and the style is simple enough to be used as an accessory or luggage easily!

20% off with the code FRIENDS here

I used to rely on the suitcases my parents had in our attic, but once I moved, I figured it was about time I have my own luggage. I own both the carry-on and checked size of this hardshell suitcase and love the classic appearance of the navy color. What’s great about this luggage is that you can go ahead and buy it as a set or break up the gift and order the various sizes separately. The hard exterior makes me think that everything inside is well protected, and the navy striped lining when you unzip it is pretty cute too.

I spent more time with this computer than I did with my family while in college. If that’s not a scary realization, I’m not sure what is, but it’s the reality. I was lucky enough to replace that first MacBook Pro I received in high school and used so much that it had to have its hard drive replaced with a newer one for my master's graduation that I hope will have an equally lengthy lifetime. From college applications, starting a blog, four years of college coursework, teaching lesson plans, graduate coursework, and the occasional Netflix binge, I’ve spent a lot of time behind the screen of a Macbook and can undoubtedly say it is worth the investment.

Definitely one of those items that is a want, not a need, but with my coffee obsession, it made for a really great gift from my brother last year. Using the app on your phone, you can set the mug to heat up to your desired temperature, and it will keep your coffee warm. I keep mine on my desk at work, and it helps me to savor my coffee instead of chugging it for fear that it will be cold come the final sip.

You can watch me rave about these items and explain more "in person" in the video below.

If you were to make this list with items you own, what would you put on it? I’d love your ideas as I begin to form my own holiday wishlist.

What's In My Work Bag + My On Sale Tote

One night after work last week, my friends and I went to Tuscaloosa for the Furman Alabama basketball game. And although it was a blast, it made for a later night than usual. After nights like that, I am especially glad when I pack my gym bag and work tote in advance to prepare for smooth sailing in the morning.

If you didn’t know, I’ve been trying to make more videos for y’all, and recently someone requested that I share what all I keep in my work tote. I love seeing what other people keep in their bag and figured I’d share the contents of mine as well. I have used a Barrington Gifts' St. Anne Tote for years and love all of the different patterns and monogram styles that you can choose from. I recently received this printed cow pattern tote and have already received so many compliments on it. Before I get into the contents of the bag, I’m excited to share with y’all that Barrington Gifts has begun their Black Friday sale. The sale is running from November 27th-December 2nd, and the more you buy, the more you save. Orders over $150 receive 10% off, Orders over $250 receive 15% off, and Orders over $350 receive 20% off with free shipping on all orders. All you have to do is enter the code THANKFUL at checkout.

While the customization of this bag is what initially drew me in, the durability of the material and ample space inside have me reaching for it time and time again. The bag has four pockets, one large one with a zipper and three smaller ones that are perfect for sunglasses, pens, and notepads. The main area perfectly fits everything else I like to bring with me and makes for easy access when I reach into the bag to find something.

Whether I am carrying my work or personal laptop, having a case to protect it is important. The case shown is one I’ve had for years from Kate Spade, but my next Barrington buy is likely going to be a laptop case since theirs has a similar shape but can be customized like the bags.

I love these clear Truffle pouches for organizing toiletries, and this year started using one of the larger sized ones as a cord holder in my bag. It’s no fun when things get tangled up at the bottom of your bag, so this is the perfect solution. I usually have a phone charger and computer charger inside, but if I’m headed to a coffee shop to do some work like to throw my headphones in there as well.

As you can probably tell at this point, I like everything to have a place. This pouch can be used as a clutch, but I like to keep it in my bag as a snack pouch. I hate going anywhere without having snacks on hand, so you’ll usually find a couple of granola bars and trail mix in here.

Blog Planner & Personal Planner
I’m a pen and paper type of girl, so keeping organized means having a place to write everything down. Because of that, I have both a blog planner (found at Target) and a work/personal planner (Day Designer) that make there way too and from home and work with me. If it’s not written in one of these, then chances are I won’t be there.

If you want to see more of the inside of this tote and hear me rave about it while sharing what I keep inside, I’ve made this post into a video that can be watched below.

Step Into My Week 11.26

Given that this is going up a day later than usual, it’s probably no surprise to y’all that things have been eventful as of late. Despite working a lot of the weekend on blog posts, I kept putting off writing my weekly recap for y’all. While it was an enjoyable week after work, tasks in the office kept me on my toes and especially busy. I am thrilled to be heading home today at noon for a little bit of time off to enjoy Thanksgiving with my family and spend some time with friends.

I started my Monday morning by packing up returns from a shoot before heading into a cover shoot meeting. After that, I spent most of my day scheduling social posts, helping stylists prepare for their upcoming shoots, responding to emails, and completing expense reports. Luckily, after work, a group of my friends decided we needed to have a Friendsgiving together before we all left town. We went over to Sarah Reagan’s apartment and had quite the spread of delicious sides and ended the night very full. I got home a little after 8:00 and worked on gift guides before heading to bed.

Tuesday morning, I woke up early to shower before heading into the office. I had a piece to finish writing that I completed that morning and spent a good deal of the day gathering ideas for upcoming shoots I am in charge of. My new position as a stylist is set to start once I get back from Thanksgiving, so I have been doing my best to firm up locations and props that I would like to use. I realized that I hadn’t used enough of the personal time I am given as an employee, so since I had plans outside of Birmingham that night decided to take off at three so that my friends wouldn’t have to wait on me. Once I got home, I took a few blog photos before changing into a Furman tshirt to head to Tuscaloosa for the Alabama Furman basketball game. Nell and I rode with two of our guy friends that went to Alabama and met up with the rest of our group at Burger Fi before heading into the game. Furman played pretty well and kept the score close despite not coming through with a win at the end. Regardless, we had a lot of fun, and I’m happy we decided to go even if it made for a later night than usual.

Wednesday ended up being quite the day that kept me on my toes after staying up later than usual on Tuesday. I had a meeting with one of our editors to talk through a shoot I’m styling and then spent most of the morning shadowing a food cover shoot. After quickly eating lunch, it was time for a staff meeting before having to finish styling a location shoot for a stylist who's daughter got sick. Once that wrapped, I brought the props back to the office and had to deliver some of them back to local stores before they closed. By the time 5:00 came around, I was tired! When I got home, I had to finish icing the second sweet potato cake I made for the Friendsgivings I had this week before heading to bible study. I got home from that around 9:00, showered, and went to sleep.

Thursday was a very educational day as I shadowed a lifestyle shoot in the office, which is uncommon for us. Usually, we head to someone’s house for larger lifestyle shoots, but we transformed one of our photo studios into a dining room (complete with a 9 foot Christmas tree and fireplace) for this particular shoot. It was for Christmas of next year and involved lots of fancy foods. The shoot didn’t wrap until after 5:00, so I had to hurry home to get ready and grab the food I was bringing for the second Friendsgiving of the week. This one was at Macy’s house and was a ton of fun. There were equally as many great sides at this one, but since there were guys involved, we had a turkey instead of Honey Baked Ham like we did on Monday. We stayed for a while after eating and played Cards Against Humanity before all heading home.

I didn’t have work on Friday since I still needed to use up some personal time and instead used the time off as an opportunity to work on cyber week blog posts. I stayed at Starbucks for about four hours doing this before heading home to shower and relax. My roommate and I had plans to meet a friend at Back Forty for a beer before heading over to a friend’s house for his belated birthday celebration around 8:00. There ended up being a couple of Furman people too, which was fun, and we spent most of the evening playing the game Picolo as a group on my roommate’s phone. Eventually, we left and headed to a nearby karaoke bar to round out our evening. I’m not a big karaoke person but had a blast mainly since everyone selected great songs. We finally got home after 1:00, and I was excited to sleep in on Saturday.

When I woke up in the morning, I relaxingly created gift guides in bed before running to a store nearby to pick something up. I had plans to get lunch with my friend Allie at Olexa’s and made a Trader Joe’s run for my family after that. When I got home, I decided to go for a run and shower before the movie night my roommate and I had planned that evening. We watched Netflix’s A Knight Before Christmas, which was as cheesy as you would expect for a Christmas movie involving a knight. We were both very excited to get in bed before 9:00 after the night before.

On Sunday morning, I worked on some blog photos before heading to church at 11:00. In the afternoon, I did some laundry, continued to work on blog photos, and talked on the phone with my family. I went to dinner with a friend that night at a very authentic Chinese restaurant called Red Pearl and was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was given that you walk through a grocery store to get to the restaurant. Once I got home, I finished working on some blog graphics for the week and went to bed.

I’m hoping that this week is a little bit less busy and am hoping that you have some time off to enjoy Thanksgiving with your families too!

November Q&A

I have had this post on my to-write list for a while, and now, at the end of the month, am finally getting it posted! I included it as both written answers to the questions y’all submitted on Instagram as well as a video so that you can learn more about me in whichever way seems more fun for you. I hope you learn something new about me or gain advice/inspiration needed in the process.

What do you do to get out of a funk?
Funks are no fun, and I’ve definitely had my fair share of them. For me personally, I am usually pretty good about pinpointing what it may stem from, and a lot of times it’s something particular coupled with feeling burnt out. I’m a lot more likely to feel like I’m in a funk if I haven’t been the best about taking care of myself with enough sleep, workouts, and filling unrushed meals. Allowing myself rest and time to workout definitely helps, but in a backward kind of way, so does keeping myself busy. Once I’ve allowed myself to rest and wallow in my funk for a little bit, making plans that I will look forward to with friends is especially helpful. If you’re interested in some other ideas, I wrote a post all about my favorite ways to get out of a funk here.

Do you budget money? If so, how?
I mentally budget it but know that is not nearly as effective as having a budget written down. I know about how much I have to spend outside of groceries, rent, gas, and bills and do my best not to go over this amount. The tricky part for me is the fact that my work income is consistent; however, the amount I make from blogging each month differs. Because of that, I make my budget as though I’m not going to make any money from blogging in a given month so that what I do make can be saved, invested back into the blog and equipment that may be needed, or set aside for future use. In the coming year, I am going to work on making a more consistent savings plan to prioritize that even more. Having received a promotion, I am going to attempt to operate as if my salary has remained the same, so the increase in salary can be used to build up my savings account. For those of you interested in budgeting or tracking your spending, I really like the Mint app.

What does your new job entail?
I am so excited about my new job! If you missed the announcement, I shared it here. I move into this role once I get back from Thanksgiving and honestly should probably start packing up my desk upstairs to move it downstairs soon. My new role will allow me to work with all 11 of the different magazines our company produces, which will be a great way to get to know more of my co-workers that I may not have interacted with as frequently. My title is “stylist,” which means that I will be styling food and lifestyle photoshoots. Any props found will be ones that I’ve sourced and called in, and I’ll be able to work with editors to develop stories that fit their visions. This will be a jump from being in a more traditional role where I am at my desk frequently to one that will differ significantly from day to day based on the shoots I’m assigned. I already have three larger lifestyle shoots lined up for December and can’t wait to share more of the behind the scenes with y’all.

What’s your enneagram?
I am a 2 wing 1, but I’m only one point away from being a 1 wing 2. I think everyone would peg me as a one, but either way, I share the same numbers in a nearly identical amount. For those of you who don’t know what the enneagram is, you can take the test here:

How do you stay healthy during the holidays?
Hooray, that the holiday season is almost here! Staying healthy during the holidays can be a bit of a challenge given all the festivities that are full of food and the colder weather making it less enticing to head outside. Last year it wasn’t hard for me to stay focused on working out over the holidays since I was training for a half marathon and knew that I would feel more confident about that race if I stuck to the training schedule I made. Because I prioritized working out, I didn’t really worry much about what I was eating. I did try to keep my breakfast routine of oatmeal consistent when I was at home, which kept me from indulging at coffee shops when I’d leave home to do blog work. Instead of basing your plans around food, opt to catch up with friends, you want to see on a walk or something more active. Workout when you can and don’t stress too much about the delicious meals being prepared. There’s a reason the holidays only come once a year and for a short amount of time ;)

Do you ever face burnout? If so, how do you combat it?
Definitely. My friends would tell you that I keep myself pretty busy, and they are certainly not wrong about that. I’m not the best about fully relaxing and would prefer to multitask while watching movies with friends than just sit still. By doing many different things all at once, burnout is inevitable. When I do feel this way, I have to remind myself that it is important to take a step back and give myself some time off. Luckily, in the same way, my friends will give me a hard time for me staying busy. They are good at reminding me that it is ok to relax. When I’m feeling especially burned out, an early bedtime or a glass of wine on the couch with friends is the step back I often need.

After graduating and moving away, how do you celebrate Christmas with Furman friends?
Keeping in touch with friends that no longer live one room over, down the hall, or on the same campus or city as you takes being intentional. I am lucky to have friends that value being intentional as much as I do. I am also fortunate that some of my friends still live nearby, making them a drive away to visit. One tradition that I love that Sophia (one of my best friends and college roommates) and I prioritized when I moved was scheduling a time to see each other each season. We both LOVE the holidays and alternate who visits who each season so that we can celebrate with one another. This year our schedule was slightly off, and we will have to celebrate Christmas late in January, but hopefully, in 2020, we will be back on track to catch our favorite Halloween and Christmas movies while we are together. As for some of my other friends (aside from Nell since we live in the same city), we don’t necessarily celebrate the holidays together but instead, try to stay caught up with one another’s lives throughout the year.

When will you post your own Christmas/birthday list (I always LOVE it)?
I love that y’all like seeing this! I will be posting it next Saturday, so stay tuned.

What are some budget-friendly gift options for family?
There are budget-friendly gift options scattered within each of my guides, but I think you will especially like the Under $30 gift guide set to go live this week that has gifts that would be great for your family members.

What have you learned from your job so far, and do you have any advice for one’s first job?
This question could be its own post. I don’t really even know how to narrow down all that I’ve learned in the jobs I’ve held since graduating. I have been lucky to figure out a career I disliked and develop a work ethic and grit to last the entirety of my contract to then discovering the job I have now in an industry that allows me to be creative and do what I love. As for advice, know that no matter what, your first job is likely going to have a large learning curve. Be ready to act like a sponge and learn as much as you can, but also don’t forget to take time for yourself to recharge and enjoy your friends.

What are some winter work outfit ideas?
I’m lucky that my work attire can be pretty casual. Because of that, I usually stick to a sweater, jeans, and some sort of boots in the winter. If you’re ever looking for work outfit ideas, I share them in my Step Into My Week posts each Monday.

What’s your current skincare routine?
I think I need to re-evaluate my current skincare routine since my face has had a few more breakouts than normal. I recently ran out of my Beauty Counter exfoliating face wash, which could be part of the problem. I use Cetaphil lotion in the morning and at night but would like to try this more moisturizing lotion at night.

Who is your favorite Gilmore Girls character?
I feel like all the Gilmore Girls characters have some flaws; otherwise, the show wouldn’t be nearly as exciting. If I had to choose, I think I’d probably say, Luke or Richard Gilmore. Lorelai’s sense of humor is relatively similar to mine, so I like her a lot too, but she can also be pretty immature.

What are your favorite recipes to make after a long day?
I don’t do a lot of cooking on weeknights since I try to prepare my meals for the week on Sunday. By doing this, I can microwave what I want to eat. If I haven’t cooked on the weekend, an easy meal I like is Trader Joe’s Turkey Chili that comes in a can. I know it sounds nasty, but it’s delicious. If you’re opposed to canned meals, cooking some chicken on a pan with vegetables is easy and filling too.

Stay tuned for a new Step Into My Week post this afternoon!
