Happy National Championship Game Day and the start of the Lilly Pulitzer sale! I know that the National Championship game probably isn’t an exciting event for most of you, but for Alabama and Clemson fans alike it is a bit of a big deal. I’m excited to start the week with fun after work plans to watch the game although I’m already a little nervous about what time I’ll finally get to bed.
If I am being honest, I was in a bit of a funk this past week. I am in part blaming the fact that we have had grey skies in Alabama for what seems like forever. Coupled with New Year’s Eve (which is a little overrated in my mind) and New Year’s Day (which always seems a bit weird to me since you’ve stayed up so late the night before) and a short work week I felt a bit off.
I came back to Birmingham last Sunday (which I mentioned in last week’s Step Into My Week) and was able to enjoy Monday with my roommate. She had been begging me to go to Zumba with her so since I was available to go I went with her that morning. Y’all I am absolutely terrible at Zumba. I spent most of the class a few steps behind everyone else laughing at myself. Afterward, we went to get coffee at Caveat and did a little bit of work there before walking around downtown Homewood. Aside from that, we spent most of our day trying to figure out what we wanted to do for New Year’s Eve. Ultimately, we went to dinner at Taco Mama before picking up our friend Macy and getting ready for the night. Macy, being the social butterfly she is, had an invite to a small house party that we ended up going to before ultimately ending up downtown at Carrigan’s. I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun we had. It was nice to be with a bit of a group since originally it was just Rebecca and I. We did, unfortunately, miss the countdown to the New Year since we had been told there were going to be fireworks and were on the outside deck. Around 1:00 we left Carrigan’s and came home. I was very happy to get in my pajamas and go to bed at the end of the night.
Tuesday, New Year’s Day, was incredibly gloomy and after sleeping in it was hard to find the motivation to be productive. I was going to stock up on groceries at Trader Joe’s, but unfortunately, they were closed. I did go for a walk for a bit in the early afternoon before coming back and watching the last two episodes of season 2 of The Bold Type in bed. After showering and making dinner, my roommate and I watched Dumplin’ on Netflix before going to bed semi-early since it was back to work the next morning.
I was shocked that I woke up before my alarm on Wednesday morning for work. I had a lot of emails to get through in the morning from when I had been gone and found that to be a good way to ease back into being in the office. After work, I went to the Y to workout which seemed to be what everyone decided to do. There were so many resolution-ists there that there was a line of people waiting for various cardio machines. It has already started to wear off, so I have hope that I won’t have to continue waiting to work out for the entire rest of the year.
Thursday was pretty productive as well with a new binder to look through and hang in the break room. I was able to work on some of my pieces for our May/June issue which is one of my goals for the coming week too. After work, I went to the gym and then came home, showered, ate dinner, and got in bed to read. I’ve been attempting to be a lot better about my bedtime which I’ll be sharing with y’all soon.
It was nice that Friday seemed to come relatively quickly and that it was a half day as well. I started the day with my favorite Friday morning routine, Starbucks Friday. After work, I went to the library to get a library card and look about new books and then went to the gym. After that, I came home and showered and hung out before the evening’s plans. One of Rebecca’s close friends from college was in town (we all went to Furman and were friends, but she’s closer to Rebecca than me, not sure if that clarifies or confuses) and we decided to go out to dinner at Freddy’s Wine Bar before going to Carrigan’s and meeting up with another Furman friend.
On Saturday morning I got up and went on a longish run since the sun finally came out. I did some laundry and showered before running errands for part of the day. Saturday night we basically had a Furman reunion at Taco Mama with about 8 of the Furman people who were in town. It was the perfect reminder that we need to do that more often than we do. For dinner we picked up Surin (Thai food) and came home to watch I, Tonya.
Sunday was pretty laid back. I woke up and made myself breakfast while also meal prepping one of the meals I am planning to eat this week. I tried my best to put in an effort to make my first full week back as seamless as possible by making food for lunches and dinners, packing my work and gym bag ahead of time, and doing little chores like washing my makeup brushes that I had put off for far too long. I went to church with my roommate at 11:00 and then went to Church Street coffee to work on this week’s blog posts. From there I went home and took some photos for upcoming posts before going on a short run to Nell’s apartment to meet her to go on a walk (clearly I was committed to soaking in the nice weather we were having). I came home afterward and talked on the phone with my parents while walking around our neighborhood and finished my day by showering cooking the other meal I had planned for the week. I got in bed around 9:15 and read for a bit before turning the lights off.
It has been a while since I shared a lately section with y'all and I am thinking I will bring it back some in 2019. Below are some of the things that I've been enjoying lately. As always, I love hearing what you've been loving lately and even what you've been up to, so please share with me in the comments!
Reading: Twenty-Two
I started this a while ago and then fell out of the routine of reading before bed and kind of forgot about it. Having just turned 24 I think it’s kind of funny to be reading this now but still, find a good deal of it to be applicable. This would be a great read for those of you still in college and looking for some encouragement about what you’re doing with your life. I have a feeling I’ll finish it this week, so I’ll let you know what I think once I’ve finished it.
Listening To: My Favorite Murder
Other than the workout playlist I’ve been having trouble being decisive about what I want to listen to music wise lately. With podcasts, however, I am in a deep hole of My Favorite Murder and don’t think I’ll emerge from that hole for a while.
Wanting: Sunshine
And fortunately, we got some this weekend :)
Watching: Bird Box and Dumplin’
Both are Netflix originals, and both left me a little bit confused, albeit for different reasons. I will say they were entertaining to watch so if you are finding yourself being indecisive with what to watch I wouldn’t encourage against it.
Loving: Ember Mug
I had told my brother about this heat regulated mug a while ago, and he ended up giving one to his fiancĂ©. I was a bit annoyed that I didn’t get one and she did, but he made up for it by giving me one for Christmas. I’ve been using it at work and at home and have noticed that it has definitely increased my coffee consumption since my coffee is always at the perfect temperature.
Cooking: Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Stuffed Sweet Potatoes and Skinny Taste’s Shrimp Tempura Roll Bowls
