Novels With Nell - Tuesdays with Morrie

So, the unthinkable happened. I finally started reading a book that Nell recommended in her Novel's with Nell post. I'm not sure she ever saw the day coming but I sure hope that y'all are quicker to take her judgement since she knows what she is talking about. I'm only about 50 pages into the book she suggested but it's pretty good so far. Being friends with Nell has its perks too since before I came back to Greenville after seeing her at the beginning of this month she pilled books that she's recommended to y'all in my arms for me to borrow and read. Today's book suggestion is one she stacked up and made sure made it into my car and sounds very intriguing.

by Mitch Albom

This is my favorite book I’ve had to read as a school assignment. I took a Physiology of Aging class last fall, and my professor wanted the class to mean more than just learning about physiological changes that accompany aging. We discussed the way aging is viewed in American society compared to others, and even wrote our own obituaries. I know that sounds really morbid but the point of the exercise was to seriously think about what we want to accomplish in life- professionally, personally, what legacy do we want to leave. And of course, we read Tuesdays with Morrie.

I had never heard of this book before that class. It’s a true story. I don’t want to give away too many details but essentially, Mitch reconnects with an old professor and mentor, Morrie Schwartz, in the last few months of Morrie’s life. They meet once a week for what Morrie calls his last class, teaching on the Meaning of Life. They discuss what’s really important at the end of the day and what gives life meaning. The story is very touching (brought me to tears a few times), and I’m glad my professor assigned it. When we had our class discussion, I could tell my classmates found it just as meaningful as I did. Both my parents read it after I told them about it and said they really enjoyed it. It’s not a thick book so it can be a fast read, but it’s one that will stick with you.

“Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it.
For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago.

Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder. Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger?

Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man's life. Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final “class”: lessons in how to live.

Tuesdays with Morrie is a magical chronicle of their time together, through which Mitch shares Morrie's lasting gift with the world.

It’s been ten years since Mitch Albom first shared the wisdom of Morrie Schwartz with the world. Now–twelve million copies later–in a new afterword, Mitch Albom reflects again on the meaning of Morrie’s life lessons and the gentle, irrevocable impact of their Tuesday sessions all those years ago. . .”
