Novels with Nell: My Sunshine Away + Giveaway

It officially feels like summer now that I am starting to fly through books thanks to sitting poolside in the afternoons. While some of those books are school related and not quite as fun I am sure to mix in some personal picks as well. Lately, the wifi at our apartment has been down which has definitely contributed to getting through a number of chapters each evening. Not to steal Nell's thunder with her book recommendation but today I wanted to share my current read with y'all as well as announce a fun giveaway that is happening on my instagram (@prepinyourstep) this morning.

St. Martin's Press is partnering with me for this giveaway of the perfect book to read this summer as well as a travel tote by Lo and Sons perfect for any trip you may have planned this season. Although I am only about 100 pages in, I completely understand why The Wife Between Us, which was released in January, is a New York Times instant bestseller. It falls into my favorite genre, psychological thrillers, and has been so suspenseful that I don't want to put it down. You can read an excerpt from the book here and watch an entertaining teaser trailer here to get a better taste of the twists and turns in the book!

To enter the giveaway for the items above, find the photo of the book on my bookshelf (seen above) on my instagram feed and follow the directions there to be entered to win. The giveaway is open to US addresses only and the prizes have been generously provided by St. Martin's Press

Now for the reason you probably clicked on this post to begin with, Nell's most recent book recommendation!

I’m sitting down to finish this book but wanted to go ahead and feature it here. Anyone who likes well-written fiction based in the South will enjoy My Sunshine Away. Since I have yet to finish, I haven’t figured out who the attacker is but have enjoyed reading about the formative years and events of the narrator’s life. It makes you think about what events are landmarks when you look back on your childhood and about the different lens with which you view those events when you reflect back with the hindsight of adulthood.

“In the summer of 1989, a Baton Rouge neighborhood best known for cookouts on sweltering summer afternoons, cauldrons of spicy crawfish, and passionate football fandom is rocked by a violent crime when fifteen-year-old Lindy Simpson—free spirit, track star, and belle of the block—is attacked late one evening near her home.

For such a close-knit community, the suspects are numerous, and the secrets hidden behind each closed door begin to unravel. Even the young teenage boy across the street, our narrator, does not escape suspicion. It is through his eyes, still haunted by heartbreak and guilt many years later, that we begin to piece together the night of Lindy’s attack and its terrible rippling consequences on the once-idyllic community.

Both an enchanting coming-of-age story and a gripping mystery, My Sunshine Away reveals the ways in which our childhoods shape us, and what happens when those childhoods end. Acutely wise and deeply honest, this is an astonishing and page-turning debut about the meaning of family, the power of memory, and our ability to forgive.”
