Novels With Nell - The Magnolia Story

When I was able to see Nell over Spring Break, she proudly announced that she was ahead on her Novels with Nell posts since she had just finished another book. At first, I thought that meant that the post was waiting in my inbox but soon figured out it meant she had read it, not written it. When I asked her what book she would be talking about this week she told me it was Chip and Joanna Gaines’ book, The Magnolia Story.

This immediately took me back to the sorority function she took me to in which the theme included dressing as TV characters (You Are What You Netflix). Although Nell had some pretty creative ideas about what we would wear, it always resulted in me being someone very strange. Since it was her function I didn’t have as much say but I definitely tried to veto some. As the event got closer, we knew we needed something easy and ultimately settled on dressing up as Chip and Joanna. Pretty creative if you ask me, and the costume was easy to recreate with items we owned. It took some searching to find this photo but I hope you’ll find it worth it. I wouldn’t say we are doing Chip and Joanna any favors, but oh well.

I’ll let Nell fill you in on the book, but I have to know, have y’all watched the finale of Fixer Upper? One break when I was home a while back my mom and I watched a bunch of episodes back to back but I haven’t kept up with the new ones.

The Magnolia Story
By: Chip and Joanna Gaines

I don’t think this next book needs much introduction. Chip and Joanna Gaines are known for their HGTV show Fixer Upper, where they take the worst house in a nice neighborhood and transform it into something beautiful. I’m not a superfan or anything but I enjoy watching Fixer Upper when I see it’s on and am always impressed with the final product. I knew they had this book out and thought why not? And I really enjoyed it! I just appreciate what they stand for and how they seem so down-to earth. They’re beloved by all who watch the show, almost like America’s sweethearts. I think that not only do viewers love watching what they can do with a home but after so much trashy reality TV that is on now, people appreciate something more family friendly and feel like these are people they could be friends with. You’ll really feel that way after reading the book. It’s so interesting to see a more personal side of their story and learn about the humble beginnings of their business that have just grown exponentially to become what it is today. For all you Chip and Jo fans wanting an inside look, this is for you!

“Are you ready to see your fixer upper?
These famous words are now synonymous with the dynamic husband-and-wife team Chip and Joanna Gaines, stars of HGTV’s Fixer Upper. As this question fills the airwaves with anticipation, their legions of fans continue to multiply and ask a different series of questions, like—Who are these people? What’s the secret to their success? And is Chip actually that funny in real life? By renovating homes in Waco, Texas, and changing lives in such a winsome and engaging way, Chip and Joanna have become more than just the stars of Fixer Upper, they have become America’s new best friends.
The Magnolia Story is the first book from Chip and Joanna, offering their fans a detailed look at their life together. From the very first renovation project they ever tackled together, to the project that nearly cost them everything; from the childhood memories that shaped them, to the twists and turns that led them to the life they share on the farm today.

They both attended Baylor University in Waco. However, their paths did not cross until Chip checked his car into the local Firestone tire shop where Joanna worked behind the counter. Even back then Chip was a serial entrepreneur who, among other things, ran a lawn care company, sold fireworks, and flipped houses. Soon they were married and living in their first fixer upper. Four children and countless renovations later, Joanna garners the attention of a television producer who notices her work on a blog one day.

In The Magnolia Story fans will finally get to join the Gaines behind the scenes and discover:

• The time Chip ran to the grocery store and forgot to take their new, sleeping baby• Joanna’s agonizing decision to close her dream business to focus on raising their children• When Chip buys a houseboat, sight-unseen, and it turns out to be a leaky wreck• Joanna’s breakthrough moment of discovering the secret to creating a beautiful home• Harrowing stories of the financial ups and downs as an entrepreneurial couple• The significance of the word magnolia and why it permeates everything they do• The way the couple pays the popularity of Fixer Upper forward, sharing the success with others, and bolstering the city of Waco along the way

And yet there is still one lingering question for fans of the show: Is Chip really that funny? “Oh yeah,” says Joanna. “He was, and still is, my first fixer upper.””
