Novels With Nell - A Christmas Carol

I remember coming back from Thanksgiving break freshman year ready to get into the holiday spirit. Despite being in a dorm Nell and I still had every intention to prepare for the holidays. We wrapped our door with wrapping paper, hung garlands and battery operated lights (since ones you plug in are apparently fire hazards in dorms), and even put personalized stockings at the end of our beds that we would drop small treats for one another in. Can you tell we kind of love Christmas? I have to say, that hasn't changed much over the years. Since freshman year the matching pajama sets we have (and not even for Christmas alone) have multiplies and last year we even put up a tree in our apartment. In the words of Buddy the Elf, "it's nice to meet another human who shares my affinity for elf culture."

With that said, I had to smirk when Nell sent her Novels with Nell to me for this week. There's no denying Nell loves a classic story and this week's recommendation is no different but certainly even more festive!

By: Charles Dickens

As I sit here in the middle of making peppermint bark brownies, it’s fair to say I’m definitely in the Christmas spirit. I kicked off the season this year by revisiting a worldwide classic and old favorite of mine. I actually hadn’t read the book since reading it for school in seventh grade (Dorothy here, I definitely had Nell read a chapter out loud to me as she was reading it before bed one night over Thanksgiving break...). Of course, I’m very familiar with the story: Marley’s ghost, the 3 spirits, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and of course, the “bah, humbug” Ebenezer Scrooge himself.

I’ve seen play and movie renditions of the story plenty of times since the middle school days. However, there’s just something about going back to the basics and reading the real deal original book. So today I encourage you to read something to get you into the holiday spirit, whether it be Dickens’s classic tale (it’s not a very long read), The Polar Express, The Sweet Smell of Christmas, whatever your favorite may be. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas, and as Tiny Tim says, “God bless us, every one!”
