How I Prep For The Week Ahead

As student teaching has gone on I’ve come to realize just how necessary it is for me to get prepared on the weekends in order to keep my weekdays a bit less overwhelming. Student teaching is hard in a number of ways but I think the hardest part for me so far has been that I am still a college student despite feeling like I am never at Furman. Since I know how important it is for me to prepare on the weekends I do have to sacrifice some more typical college weekend events in order to feel ready for the week ahead. If the benefits of prepping for the week ahead on the weekends wasn’t so obvious then I would probably neglect parts of my process however, since my weeks tend to go so much more smoothly and stress free I’ve established the necessity of doing certain things in order to prep for the week ahead.

While there are other things that would certainly help this is what I’ve come up with as my must-dos in order to enter into the week ready to go.

Go Grocery Shopping
Going to the grocery store isn’t something I love to do. I owe that in part because most of the time I wait to go until I am out of what I need so my timing is a bit more inconvenient. That is why I’ve started to try to make it a point to go to the store (with a list) to get my groceries for the week. Since I am student teaching I have to pack myself a lunch each day so it is pretty important that I have supplies to do that on hand.

Do Laundry
While I don’t recommend doing laundry on Sunday if you use a communal laundry room at school, that is typically when I do laundry. I like starting the week with all of my clothes folded and where they belong so that I have them ready to wear throughout the week.

Complete Planning, Print Everything, and Organize Materials
This is more geared towards student teaching and ensuring that my lesson plans are good to go but it works for your school materials as well. If you have everything written down and where it needs to be it makes actually working through the material a bit less time consuming. On Sunday I like to have all of my lesson plans and resources for the week organized and in my student teaching binder (see how I organize it here)  so that I don’t feel frazzled each day before school.

Clean My Room
Cleaning my room(and apartment)  is a stress relief for me personally. I have trouble focusing when my surroundings are messy so starting the week with a clean way is one way to help to ensure that my week is productive. I like to vacuum, wipe down my desk, and clean my bathroom over the weekend so that even if some of my belongings get out of place at least my space is clean.

Think About Outfits In Advance
This one may sound kind of silly but when you have to wake up at 5:00 in the morning the less decisions you have to make before 6:00 the better. For me that involves my outfits. Since I student teach I have to look at least semi professional each day and have found that if I pull together outfits over the weekend I am wasting less time standing in front of my closet in the morning which lets me press snooze one extra time!

Check My Agenda & Plan Out My Week
I am a planner and am completely reliant on it to keep my schedule in order. At the start of each week I like to make sure that I have everything written down for the week so that I can plan out other activities with friends.

Sign Up for Workout Classes
Putting down everything in my planner makes it easier for me to see when I’ll be able to make it to workout classes throughout the week. I talk all about my workout in this post but scheduling them in advance and writing them down definitely keeps me more committed to them.

So there you have it, my best tips for how to prepare for the week ahead and make it slightly less stressful. I’d love to hear any tips you may have to make preparing for the week ahead easier!
