Step Into My Week

Hello Friday and Hello February. This week sure did feel like it was going to last forever although that may be in part due to me thinking that it was Thursday on Tuesday...Alas, we made it to Friday and this is my last day of class for the semester (aside from a few days of class I'll have while the school I am student teaching at is on Spring Break). We have our only test of the semester today, a presentation, and a Sending Off Seminar that they keep optimistically referring to as SOS which is really encouraging. Student teaching begins Monday and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. It doesn't help that the unit I've been planning will begin being taught first thing that morning while one of my professor comes to visit so this weekend will consist of a whole lot of school work (as most lately have).

Weekends are my time to refresh and I am doing my very best to make sure to throw in a bit social as well. On Friday night I went to a fraternity date function with a friend. The theme was supposed to be tacky tourists but when I arrived I realized that no one dressed to the theme (meanwhile I'm jokingly wearing something like this, thank goodness I had a jacket on). Needless to say I felt so out of place (feel free to laugh about it, I am) so I hurried back to my apartment to change. We went to the function and then a big group of us went downtown for a bit. I'm not usually one who takes advantage of the night scene in Greenville but I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I had!

Saturday morning I got up early so that I could head to Barre3 before really getting into my day. I had a great workout and got some food afterward for what I thought was going to be a semi relaxing day. That is until the teacher on our grade level team at school who plans math called me to let me know that the unit I had been planning (read: slaving over for 2 weeks for both a Furman and student teaching project) wasn't one they were actually going to teach. Cue the tears and frustration. I forced myself to get my act together and go off campus to start over. I am one of those people that puts a ton of effort into school work so knowing that the countless hours I had already put into this project were semi-wasted did not make for a very good attitude. After working all week to get everything back in order I am on the right track again although doing it twice has been less than ideal. I start teaching the unit on Monday and it will last until February 23rd so there is still a decent bit to be done this weekend to make sure all of my ducks are in a row. Thankfully, I have friends and roommates who felt for me and made sure to give me pep talks as needed. Saturday night Nell and I decided that Mexican and margaritas at one of our favorite Mexican restaurants downtown followed by a slice of cheesecake to-go from the Cheesecake factory would be just the cure and I am happy to report back it seemed to do the trick!

Sunday was a day of more homework after a crepe brunch with my friend Ellison. I went to Barre3 that afternoon for a much needed study break and spent the rest of the night and afternoon working on homework and lesson plans. That's honestly how a lot of my week has been spent and because of that I am so thankful to have friends in my major to sit with in the library while we all work on the same sort of things.  So aside from school work, Barre3, and vent sessions with friends this week didn't hold too much out of the ordinary.

On Tuesday my Furman class went on a field trip to a few different schools to observe their technology instruction. It's always cool to see what different elementary schools are doing and one even had classes that utilized Legos and engineering into daily classroom practices. Thursday, I was back at my school for the day and finally got to tell the kids that I would be with them every day which made them very excited!

Now y'all are more up to date on my life and it is time for me to get back to studying! If you didn't have a chance to read (all 7!) of the blog posts I put up this week you should definitely start scrolling! Also, if you need a pick me up in video form then this is for you!

Still working on getting better about taking photos for posts like this to share with y'all!

  3. I can't wait to hear more about your student teaching, although I really am sorry about the problems with the unit you had been working on! This time last year, I was completing my student teaching in an 10th and 12th grade classroom and I loved it so much-I was able to do a unit on the Civil War and it was probably my favorite thing I've ever had the opportunity to teach about! I hope you'll share more teacher-y things with us in the future (things you're teaching, outfits, etc.) because I only know of one other younger-teacher blogger out there!

  5. Isn't it strange how margaritas and mexican food seem to cure anything?! The things you learn at college! Hope this next week turns out a smidge less stressful for you.
